Shams have a well-established reputation amongst the stone fruits market in the Kingdom, in fact the brand is not only recognized, but has become a house-hold name. Origins of the PeachThe peach originated in an area around the city of Xian, in central China, and has been cultivated there for at least 3000 years. Although cultivation and domestication has with time changed the fruit from its original form, the wild peach, known as “Maotao” or “Yietao”, can still be found in remote areas of China. The peach made its way to Europe through Persia, or what is today modern-day Iran, and thus acquired the somewhat misleading botanical name of “Prunus Persica”. Through trade and human settlement, peach cultivation spread globally through the centuries and peaches are now grown in at least 64 countries. Nutritional Information• The antioxidant qualities of peaches aid in preventing the damage caused by free radicals and generally improve the state of the immune system.• The peach contains high amounts of Vitamin A, or beta-carotene, a provitamin that is converted to Vitamin A by our body which helps combat the effects of aging. • The peach is also rich in Vitamin B, Vitamin C, folic acid, calcium, potassium and zinc. • Peaches are a good source of fiber and are low in calories. • Although there are various ways to cook and store peaches, the most nutritional benefits can be derived from consuming them fresh and whole in their natural state – just as they are provided by our organic farms. Storing and Handling Peacher• Peaches can bruise easily and it is therefore essential to handle them with care.• Peaches that are not yet ripe can be stored in paper bags to accelerate the ripening process. However, care should be taken as piling them on top of each other can also result in bruising! • Peaches are best enjoyed at room temperature, as that ensures maximum flavor and aroma. However, once ripe, it is possible to store them in a refrigerator for up to a week. |
